GEORGES JEANCLOS, France

He was my idol and from time to time I used to look at my two firmly fixed ears in the mirror.

At the age of 18, I painted a portrait of myself holding my brushes. like a modern day "fan", I followed
in his footsteps. I wanted to be a painter but the choice on the palette was so difficult that I became a
sculptor.

I moved to Auvers-sur-Oise and went to live just a hundred metres front Dr Gachet's house, the Ravoux
Inn became our meeting point, the church, the town hall without its lights, the plains and the two gra-
ves in the cemetery became unbearable.

To escape from that "all-to-real" presence, I returned to Paris and took a house in the rue de Lappe. Van
Gogh had vanished from my life... in order to reappear at your request.

Georges Jeanclos, July, 1988.
