I was fascinated by the self-portraits first of Rembrandt then of van Gogh in the history of art.

That tense feeling, devoid of all narcissism, attracted me as did the existing correspondence between
these self-portraits and the contents of their work as a whole.

I have rediscovered this tense and solar relationship of the selfportrait in his painting of the sunflo-
wers, which are in fact themselves, self-portraits.
